DEAR FRIEND,

Did you know that approximately 500 children from 0-14 years of age were expected to die from leukemia in the year 2004? My child was one of those 500 children. My daughter, Alyssa Bailey Marko, fought a courageous 4-year battle with leukemia. Her battle ended July 22, 2004.

Our daughter spent endless days in the hospital battling for her life. Those days should have been spent at school, playing outside, or at home with her family. As you can only imagine those days were long and difficult.

My daughter's fight has inspired myself and others to support the only Pediatric Oncology Unit in Central New York. Our goal is to raise funds to support the Pediatric Oncology Unit and Child Life Program at Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital in Syracuse, New York. The Child Life Program assists sick children to cope with their fears and anxieties through therapeutic activities such as play and art. Funds from the race also benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

To support these organizations, a 5K run is held each October in memory of Alyssa.
